We will be staying in Lisbon, Portugal in May. Would like to visit Paris since neither of us have been to France. What would be the best way for us to go from Lisbon to Paris….we have about 7 or 8 days to spend in France? And would you recommend a tour while we are there or could we visit the sights on our own? We need to return to Lisbon for our flight back to the US.
Thanks for any suggestions!

You would see more of the French countryside if you took the train. However, the cheapest and fastest way would probably be one of the low-cost European airlines.
In Paris there is a hop on hop off bus tour that is probably very worthwhile. We haven’t taken it but many others have recommended it. It certainly would let you get your bearings if you haven’t been to Paris before. It has the added benefit that if you see something that you really like, you can get off, visit it and then get back on the next bus and continue.
There are several boat tours on the Seine but, of course, you would only see things along the river. They are fun and would be a nice addition to the bus tour.
After you get your bearings, you will probably want to spend most of your time walking. The major sights are quite near each other and Paris was made for walking. It is such a lovely city.
Since you have several days, you could do a day trip to Versailles, Chartres or Giverny and take the train. Or you could just stay in Paris and enjoy it . . .
Enjoy your trip.
sharz: My advice would be to buy a tour guide of Paris and start digesting it. Paris is an absolutely gorgeous and facinating city. In a week you could do the city justice. I would recommend that you buy the appropriate Metro and Museum passes and and then develop a list of what you want to see and do. Paris has it all. Food, history, culture and entertainment. Donerail
Hi there!
My partner is Portuguese and used the TGV service from Lisbon to Paris a couple of years ago. It took him a minimum of 12 hours and you will have to change (from memory he thinks this is the South of France – also beautiful!).
The TGV is extremely efficient and competitive price wise. I would have a look at:-

Whilst you are in Paris, I suggest a bus tour to get familiar with the sights – but also try a Bateaux Mouche on the Seine. They go from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame – and you can have lunch on the way. My favourite is the left bank and the latin quarter, but try "Rue de Lappe" and Place de la Republique too (more locals here).
Have fun!
