Thanks SalB for the referral. Found plenty of gites to choose from around the Nice area, I can’t beleive how affordable they are. Should I be afraid?
Now I just need to find some Harley’s for rent then we’re set!

Cricket, Gites de France has an excellent reputation. I don’t think you need to worry. Obviously some will be nicer than others and you often get what you pay for, but I think you will get clean, adequate accomodation.
Harley’s are a bit difficult to come by in France. You may have to settle for a BMW. They’re quieter anyway. Have you considered a Vespa? Not a lot of power, but great gas mileage. Try a Google on French motorcycle rentals.
cricket: Manunice is a good resource for Harley rentals in Nice. Also HOG has international rentals. Check out the H-D website. And for God’s sake, don’t rent a BMW or Vespa or Ducati etc. Go with the American Dream. Live it up. Liberate yourself and the French. That would put your vacation over the top. People would probably allow you to stay for free in return for defending their freedom. I am not doing too well in trying to convert SalB to be a BikerChic. I haven’t given up yet, but learning that she is a far left wing Republican has confused me. Donerail
My goodness, donerail, you were confused long before you met me.
SalB: You are correct again. But I don’t think I was as deeply confused as I am now.
Donerail
donerail, Don’t underestimate yourself. Of course you were.
SalB: I cannot underestimate your ability to infuse more confusion into one’s thought process. It must be those latent Republican genes that take command. It certainly is a talent. Donerail
what are gites ? sry i am ignorant
I located a Harley Shop near Marseille that does rent Harley’s. So we will do it right! I shipped my Harley to France in 2000 for a year of play and brought back a french, harley owning husband. What a souvenir!!!!! ooohlala!
riverbollin: "Gites" is a weird sounding name for what it is. I believe it is either a home/cottage for rent – or a "B&B" type arrangement – something other than your typical hotel/inn accommodations.
Cricket: That is fantastic. You have to share your riding experiences with us. I am sure SalB is very interested. I tried to tell my wife that a Harley is a good investment. Looks like you have proved my point. I think.

Translation of "gite" is a holiday cottage. These can be small houses or apartments and are what the British cheerfully refer to as "self catering" which means they are equipped with necessities of life such as dishes, cooking utensils, linens, etc. You live in them as you would your own home. Many are rural although there are some, usually apartments, in cities. They are nice for families with children and for those who prefer to relax and do some of their own cooking. It’s a bit like living there rather than visiting there.
There is an organization called Gites de France that is very reputable but there are other gite organizations too. Some of the gites can get pretty fancy and others are quite primitive. You usually have to rent for at least a week although out of season, it’s possible to spend three days or even overnight in one. It’s a good way to get to know an area. In Italy, the comparable organization would probably be Agriturismo.
yes, better luck to ship u’re Harley directly to France, I don’t know or heard any place here that rent Harley, there isn’t in Nice that is for sure! And if there is, the price it is gonna be completly craaaazy!!

There is a really great British magazine called "France." They have a real estate section in it and usually articles about purchasing a house in France. If you have a library, see if they have any back issues because the last issue had a couple excellent articles. Otherwise, hie yourself to your nearest book dealer and purchase a copy. There are all kinds of estate agents who specialize in moving from Britain to France.
Good luck.
Riverbollin: I just realized you were talking about Manchester England and not Manchester, New Hampshire or Manchester (by the sea) Massachusetts. How quaint. Donerail
