Hello everyone,
I am attending a wedding reception in Gisors in late August and looking for recommendations on lodging. I’ve found a couple: the Hotel Moderne and the Chateau de la Rapee. I’m looking for something charming, immaculate, and in a great part of town. Any recommendation short of camping is welcome as well as any expertise on the two I’ve already mentioned.
Thank you ~ chercher
P.S. Could someone also please explain what "half board" means?

Hi, chercher. Half board means room and two meals per person. At the hotel you will get your room and breakfast. Then you may choose whether you want to take either lunch or dinner (not both) at the hotel. In other words, you get two meals a day with your room.
Keep in mind that the room price without board is for two people. If you take half board, that is for only one person. You really have to do your math to decide if it is worth it. We’ve found excellent half board offers . . . but we’ve also found half board offers that are not much savings at all and you are tied to the hotel for your meals. Since we like to travel around an area to see all the sights, we often prefer to eat our meals in another town. You need to be sure the hotel restaurant is okay too. I would hate to do half board in a bad restaurant!! Fortunately, there aren’t a lot of bad restaurants in France.
As far as finding a room, have you tried the search function here on France.com? Go up to the top of the page and click on the blue and red title, "France.com" which will take you to their home page. Then click on the little box that says Hotels and do a search by town. You should come up with something there and the reservation service is excellent. We’ve used it often and I highly recommend it. (They also have reviews and photos and the reviews are usually quite accurate.)
If you don’t find anything there, try the Logis de France chain of hotels. They are small hotels all over France and most have very nice little restaurants. They come in all price ranges. There are photos on the web site but no reviews. We’ve also used their reservation service and found it completely reliable. Again, highly recommended. The web address in English is: http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/
As far as cleanliness, even very cheap hotels are usually spotless and have private bathrooms.
Good luck.
Thanks for defining "half board," SalB.
I actually found this forum after using the France.com hotel search engine. I was hoping to find something around the area that wasn’t listed on the internet. Thanks anyway!
I tried Gisors on France.com and only found one listing. You could try other towns in the area or the Logis de France that I also mentioned. The De Paris in Les Andelys looks very nice and Les Andelys is a nice little town near Giverny and Rouen. There is an impressive ruined chateau on a hill above the town. It’s on the Seine and there are good roads and lots of stores.
We’ve stayed at le Moulin de Connelles Hôtel and I would recommend it highly. They have their own web site at http://giverny.org/hotels/connelle/index.htm or you could call them at tel : 33 (0) 232 59 53 33 or fax : 33 (0) 232 59 21 83. It’s right on the Seine and rather out in the sticks. We like the quiet but if you want to be "in town," you won’t be happy there. There is a small town nearby with basic grocery, deli and pastry shop but not much else. It is quiet and lovely . . . things we look for. The roads in and out are excellent.
We haven’t stayed there for four or five years but I can’t imagine they wouldn’t have kept it up. We spent a wonderful week there and toured the area, ranging as far as Mont St. Michel one day.
I noticed on the Logis de France map search a place in Lyon de Foret. I don’t know anything about the hotel, but the town is lovely.
You might also post your question on Fodors.com. They have a large membership who seem to have stayed everywhere. I’m sure you’d get some answers. They can be a bit contentious, but if you need the information, use the info and ignore rude remarks. They are usually rude to each other rather than the questioners anyway. I’ve learned to ignore the disagreements and glean the information which is usually excellent.
Good luck.
I’m considering a visit to Giverny after the reception and did look at le Moulin de Connelles Hôtel. It’s just a little too pricey right now given the dollar’s weakness. Thanks for the recommendation.
Have you looked at Chateau Hotel de la Rapee in Bazincourt Sur Epte? It’s between 80 and 126 euros and looks lovely. It’s right above Gisors and not far from Giverny. There was also the Hotel des Paris in les Andelys I mentioned earlier.
I haven’t stayed in either of these but the Logis de France chain is very reliable. They might be worth a look at the http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/ web site.
Wishing you luck. Keep us posted.
