My goodness, you are in Cathar country. You might enjoy the Cathar Pass that gives you discounts on entry to all the Cathar sites.
Restaurants . . . Don't know how far you want to drive but we ate at a cute place in Puivert at La Dame Blanche. It's a rustic, very characterful restaurant and if it's chilly, they will have a fire in the fireplace. The chateau is interesting nearby.
The Auberge Le Cathare outside Belflou at Chateau La Barthe is fabulous. Madame's cassoulet is a prize winner and deservedly so. I'm not sure they are still open so you may want to call ahead at ?33-4-68-60-32-49. It is definitely worth a trip.
In ?St. Génis-des-Fontaines there is a very good restaurant, ?Le Barbizon and it is open on Sundays, not a guarantee in that area. I highly recommend their duck.
In ?Cerbère near the Spanish border is La Dorade with good food and a lovely view of the harbor. If it's nice, eat outside.
Interesting things in the area are the Centre europeen de prehistoire in Tautavel and for fun, the Parc de la Prehistoire near Tarascon-sur-Ariege that is a prehistoric theme park. Great views, educational and lots of fun. The Cathar castles all have terrific views.
Mirepoix is a gorgeous little medieval town that seems quite unspoiled.
Castle in Foix with a museum in the square tower and great views from the top.
Villefranche-de-Conflent is beautiful and you can get the Little Yellow Train there.
Eus is a lovely cobblestone village tucked into the hills as is Castelnou. Both are worth a trip.
There is a modern art museum in Ceret and the town is lovely. There is an excellent restaurant and I can't remember the name. It's up the main street on the left past the Museum of Modern Art. It's in a belle epoque building and last time we saw it, it was painted a pale pink color. Really good . . .
Elne and Collioure are good visits and if you haven't seen Carcassonne, you might want to make the trip. It's amazing whether or not you agree with the authenticity of the restoration.
Enjoy one of my favorite areas of France.
