Has anyone tried the (relatively) new very inexpensive European airlines? How are they?
Do you prefer those to the TGV? Just curious.
Some of the fares I’ve seen have been amazing. The only thing that might bother me is that you don’t get to see the countryside between cities and, of course, with the train you land in the city center.

What are the names of these new cheap European airlines? I’ve never heard of this!! Do tell!
LVB, Sure you have . . . Ryan Air, Volare, etc. They are all listed on the web site listed below. Check it out. I bet you’ve heard of most of them. They go in and out of business pretty quickly but the prices are phenomenal, much cheaper than the train. Of course you can’t see the scenery but if you’re zipping past at high speed on a train, I’m not sure how much you see anyway. If your time is really limited, these airlines would be a good deal. I just wonder what kind of service you get, what security is like and how much room you have.

If the trip is 4 hours or less by train, I can’t see how the low fare airlines can compete with the TGV. The TGV is fast, quiet, and comfortable and you are not treated like a criminal for using it. When you are at your destination you are "downtown there" and not in need of a cab ride or other form of transportation. If the trip is beyond 4 hours, a plane has to be considered. Just avoid those planes that have propellers on them. BTW, on the TGV you can see the scenery quite nicely. In fact, you are going so fast you can’t see the poles that hold the electric lines going by until the train slows down to less than 100mph. The TGV is absolute joy to ride on. Donerail
For any trips to Eastern Europe, I rec’d skyeurope.com. Very cheap and good destinations.

I was just curious. On other forums I’ve heard of air fares as low as 5 to 15 euros (no, that is not a typo). Yes, you have to get from some pretty strange airports into the city but it still seems like a pretty good deal if you just want to go from city to city.
If you’re touring the countryside, a car seems more practical.
