I am interested in seeing the cave paintings in the Dordogne region, as well as the megaliths near the area of Carnac. I am relying solely on public transportation. Is this possible and/or reasonable? How much time should I allow? And if it is possible, where can I quickly find more information on how to make it happen? I have several guide books, none of which have very detailed information on this area. Thanks.

If you wanna visit prehistoric France, you should either use a time machine or wait for a magnetic storm to take you back in time.
Another solution is to go to the "prehistoric" sites, such as Lascaux caves and Les Eyzies in Dordogne. That area next to Sarlat is full of prehistoric sites and the national prehistoric museum. I’m sure there are other ares in France, butr that one is probably the richest.
Enjoy!
