Hi Franklin. I’m not sure exactly what you want to know but I’ll give you a few suggestions and then perhaps you can tell me what else you need. Is this for a trip or is it for a paper you have to write? Do you need the information right now or do you have a few days to find it?
Okay . . . maps. The best map site I’ve found for France is Mappy. http://www.mappy.fr/
You can also try the Michelin map site. http://www.viamichelin.com/
If you have some time, go to your nearest library and see what they have. They may or may not have the Michelin "France Tourist and Motoring Atlas." If they do, it’s a great map and has all the small towns and villages of France in it. If your library doesn’t have it, go to your nearest Borders or Barnes & Noble Bookstore to see if they have it. Any good bookstore should have it.
For small towns and villages: My first suggestion would be to do a search right here on France.com. Click on the blue and red visitfrance.travel at the top of this page. When you get to the home page, there are some pictures at the top and one says "Travel." Click on that and you’ll get a lot of information.
Other helpful web sites:
http://www.discoverfrance.net/
http://www.franceguide.com/
http://www.francetourism.com/
http://www.beyond.fr/ has a link for "towns & villages"
http://www.le-guide.com/langindex.html
http://tlp.netfirms.com/ a private web page with info on Languedoc
If you have a bit of time, go to your local library or bookstore and look for the series of books on Most Beautiful Villages in Provence, Most Beautiful Villages in Burgundy, Most Beautiful Villages in the Dordogne . . . you get the idea.
If there is a university near you, go to their library and ask the reference librarian to help you. Reference librarians are wonderful people who live to help others find information.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
SalB: thanks for the info I usually just google the towns/regions in France that I want to see..these sights are useful
