ManuNice, Perhaps she wants to know whether to start on the right cheek or the left cheek?
We just got back from France & Italy. The hotel in Nice was not a great hotel, but the people who ran it were wonderful. Air France managed to lose our luggage and the hotel manager kept bugging them for us until it was delivered. It took two days for my husband’s suitcase to arrive.
We got horribly lost looking for the hotel due to the crazy construction at the bottom of the hill. The manager’s wife did all the paintings in the hotel. She is really talented . . . although she paints better than she cooks!
You know how you went up to see the hotel and asked to take pictures and he wouldn’t let you? We had no problem. He cheerfully let us take all the pictures we wanted. I think his problem was that the photos on his web site are not photos of his restaurant and he probably thought you were an inspector from Logis de France. When we walked in, my first thought was, "This is not the restaurant on the web site!" It was kind of funny but they really were wonderful people and the view can’t be beat.
BTW, we had a great trip and definitely preferred France. Italy is pretty but not as clean and we like the scenery better in France. We really enjoyed Nice. You have a lovely city.

When greeting there is a general convention about kissing that I believe is being referred to. What greeting you use depends on how well you know the person you are greeting.
Men greeting men do not kiss but shake hands (however well they know each other).
Men greeting women and women greeting women may kiss or may shake hands, depending on how well they know each other. Generally, if you are unsure offer you hand to shake hands. This is particularly the case if you are a bloke greeting a woman. With younger people the kissing greeting is generally started after fewer meetings whereas with older generations it can be a bit longer. As a visitor, don?t make assumptions and be ready top react to how you are going to be greeted.
Generally (my experience) you start with right cheek to right cheek. You don?t actually need to kiss. The number of kisses varies depending on what region you are in and you should try to get this right. As soon as you arrive somewhere, keep your eyes open to see how many kisses people use when greeting so you know should you need to.
If you get it wrong, don?t worry. I live on the border between 2 kisses and 4 kisses areas and I have seen one person go for the 3rd and 4th and the other stop after 2.
When attending something (e.g. a drinks party or other socialish gathering) when you arrive you should try to go round and greet everybody there.
When I moved to France (from the UK) I found there were quite a few things in general etiquette that were different. Another example is that, when telephoning somebody/somewhere, you should state who you are when the call is answered. This is not a requirement but often regarded as good manners.
