The Cannes Film Festival is a prestigious international film festival. It has been held annually in Cannes, in the south of France, since 1946 with a few exceptions.

Given massive media exposure, the Festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for movie producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.

After Protest Threats, Cannes Turns to the Films

CANNES, France (Reuters) – A Spanish film launched the Cannes film
festival for the first time on Wednesday, as organizers heaved sighs of
relief that the threat of labor protests raining on the Riviera glamour
parade has been averted.

On Tuesday they reached a last-ditch deal with stagehands and part-time
French actors who had planned to disrupt the event in pursuit of a
pensions deal.

The workers will now be welcomed on Wednesday night’s official
opening in the Palais des Festivals and allowed to hold news
conferences to air their grievances.

Ahead of the opening, the world’s press were shown cult Spanish
director Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education,” a noirish thriller about
child abuse in the Catholic church.

Turkey and Constitution set to dominate European elections in France

The vexed questions of whether to support Turkey’s
bid to become an EU member and whether to hold a referendum on the
Constitution are emerging as the main issues as the European election
campaigns kick off in France.

On the first issue, the ruling centre-right UMP party, is steadfastly against Turkish entry.


Its electoral programme, recently cleared by the party membership,
says, “Turkey has no business in the European Union”, sentiments echoed
recently by the UMP leader, Alain Juppe who said last month, “The UMP
does not want to see discussions with Turkey at the end of the year”.

Ottawa to fund D-Day veterans' trip to France

Bowing to public pressure, the federal government is set to offer more
than $1 million to allow aging veterans of the D-Day invasion to attend
ceremonies in France next month to mark the historic event’s 60th
anniversary.

According to the Toronto Star, veterans will be reimbursed for part of their travel costs, perhaps as much as $1,000 each.

Veterans Affairs Minister John McCallum will make the announcement from Ottawa at 10:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (Ðiện Biên Phủ) occurred in 1954 between Viet Minh forces under Vo Nguyen Giap and French airborne and Foreign Legion forces. The battle was fought near the village of Dien Bien Phu in northern Vietnam and became the last battle in the Indochina War which had begun in 1947.

Background
In 1953 the French had started the process of strengthening its defenses in the Hanoi delta region and were generally preparing for a series of offenses against the Viet Minh staging areas in north-west Vietnam. They had also set up a number of fortifed towns and outposts in the area, including Lai-Chau near the Chinese border to the north, Na San to the west of Hanoi, and Luang-Prabang and Plaine des Jarres in northern Laos.

Name of Rooms vs. Number of Beds

Behind this rather cryptic name, we want to answer a question that comes back repeatedly and that we assume is a question for almost every american who makes a hotel reservation in Europe.

In France, the name of the room (i.e. ‘double standard’) refers to the bed in the room. A ‘Double’ bed is somewhat the equivalent of a queen bed in the US. So a Double room has a queen bed, whereas a twin room has 2 twin beds. Both rooms are for 2 people. A room where 3 people can sleep is called a triple room, etc.

The matter gets more complex with suites, executive suites because there is no standard and the room with the same name can mean
2 different things with different hotels.
