INTRODUCTION
There are two elements of major significance that contribute to Vaux le Vicomte's lasting fame. Vaux was the tragic setting for the downfall of Fouquet, a faithful minister who paid the price of life imprisonment, because of an embezzlement he did not commit, because of the jealousy of others and also because he went a little too far in bestowing lavish hospitality. For a period of ten years under Fouquet's protection, Vaux was also a haven for leading French artists. Writers, poets, painters and sculptors gave the best of their talents to the glory of Vaux.
HISTORY OF THE CASTLE
In 1559, Raoul Moreau's quest was far from ordinary, and resulted in an astonishing creation. Treasurer of the King of France, a man of wealth, and also an alchemist, he did not find the Philosopher's Stone, but the ideal place to conduct his occult research.

The national Chèvreloup arboretum is a veritable living museum of the tree, spread over 200 hectares (494 acres). Located a few kilometres from Paris, in the national domain of Versailles, it offers a panorama of tree species from the northern hemisphere.
A place where the tree is king
Surrounded by streams and lying near a bird sanctuary, Royaumont Abbey was built in a protected environment developed by the monks. The remarkably well-preserved Abbey still stands surrounded by wetlands and forests. Its cloister and refectory are among the most outstanding still extant.

In a 15 ha (37 acres) park planted with trees, at the heart of the Bois de Vincennes (Vincennes wood), the Paris zoo is one of France's best-known zoos. It offers the visitor a welcome change of scenery and the chance to get close to almost 500 animals.
Founded in 1937, this internationally-famous institution is currently preparing its renovation around the natural and cultural history of man, the main themes being: origins, the peculiarities of the human species and a cultural history of humanity.Left, a part of the cast of Lucy's skeleton, Australopithecus who lived 3.2 million years ago. With its astonishing architectural elements (mainly dating from the 18th and 19th centuries), the Ménagerie is the world’s oldest zoo that retains its original appearance. It offers 4,500 m2 (48,400 sq. ft) of greenery which is home to a thousand animals.
As much a theatre of life itself, the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution displays thousands of animal specimens. Larger than life, they tell the astonishing story of evolution: presented in three acts in a grandiose stage set.
