France Commemorates 'The Other D-Day'
France opened a weekend tribute Saturday to the American, French and African soldiers who helped liberate its land from Nazi Germany’s grip in one of the least-remembered military operations of World War II: the Allied invasion of the Riviera.
On the eve of a ceremony involving heads of state from 15 nations and representatives from six other countries mainly former African colonies France thanked British and American veterans of Operation Dragoon for their role in what is called “the other D-Day.”
Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade says he will establish an annual holiday on Aug. 23 to commemorate the “forgotten” role the hundreds of thousands of African troops played in France’s World War II liberation.

'French Chef' Child 91, dies
Julia Child, who turned the art of French cooking into prime-time television entertainment and brought cassoulet to a casserole culture in the two volumes of her monumental “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” died Friday at her home in Santa Barbara, two days before her 92nd birthday.
The cause was complications of kidney failure, said a niece, Philadelphia Cousins.
Pope makes Lourdes pilgrimage

Has anyone tried the (relatively) new very inexpensive European airlines? How are they?
Do you prefer those to the TGV? Just curious.
Some of the fares I’ve seen have been amazing. The only thing that might bother me is that you don’t get to see the countryside between cities and, of course, with the train you land in the city center.

Nuclear Iran
Iran has backed away from its agreement not to develop nuclear weapons or fissile materials. The subject agreement was brokered by European leaders as the USA does not have diplomatic relations with Iran. What do forum members think of this development and what should the next steps be?
