PARIS, Jan. 30 (Xinhuanet) — France is to make May 10 a memorial day to mark the abolition of slavery, French President Jacques Chirac announced on Monday.
“From this year I would like mainland France to honour the memory of slaves and commemorate the abolition of slavery,” the president said in an address to a government-appointed Committee for the Memory of Slavery.
“Slavery fed racism. When people tried to justify the unjustifiable, that was when the first racist theories were elaborated. Racism is a crime of the heart and the spirit … which is why the memory of slavery remains a living wound for someof our fellow citizens,” he said.
Corsica is one of the 26 régions of France, although strictly speaking Corsica is called a “territorial collectivity” (collectivité territoriale) by law. As a territorial collectivity, it enjoys powers slightly more important than other French régions, but for the most part its status is quite similar to the status of the other French régions. Corsica is referred to as a “région” in common speech, and is almost always listed among the other régions of France. Although the island is separated from the continental mainland by the Ligurian Sea, politically Corsica is considered part of Metropolitan France.
Corsica is famed as the birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte.

I am going to France in October to take a two-week French course in Tours. I then have six days to make my way by train to Marseille where I will catch my flight home.
Any recommendations on where to visit?
Good morning,
I will be in Paris May 18th-24th. I am looking for a good quality hotel (could care less if the rooms are small) around 90-120 or even up to 150 USD per night in the Marais district.
Any good recommendations are welcome.
Thanks.
Bonjour (?)
My wife and I are heading for Paris the last week of April 2006. Being a photography fan I am seeking a hotel that offers ample photo ops as well a being in close proximity of the major monuments and attractions. Hopefully the hotel will be clean, comfortable and well maintained as well as being situated centrally.something in the 100-125 Euro range is ok.
Eagerly awaitng your help.

I used the reservation search on the site here and received the following message – "Looking for other property."
I know the hotel I was looking for – the Hotel du Palais in Montpellier doesn’t appear to have a web presence – so does that mean the site is waiting for my approval to look for another hotel?
I’d like to stay at this one due to the location, so I really don’t want to look elsewhere until I find out they are booked full.
Any help on clarifying the process would be appreciated.
Thanks,
GB

In America the am radio talk show host are keeping much of the hard feelings alive. Most Americans now believe we shouldn’t have gone to Iraq in the first place. There were no WM D’s or terrorist there. Now there are terrorist there and we don’t know how to get out!
Hi, I’m new to this forum but I hope regulars won’t mind me asking, why is everyone so obsessed with Paris? France has so much more to offer but whenever you look at forums – not just on France.com – 90% seems to be people visiting Paris! Nice city, but anywhere less representative of the ‘real’ France you could not hope to find! What does anyone else think?
