Armstrong takes Tour de France lead

Lance Armstrong knows there’s only one place where the leader’s yellow jersey really counts in the Tour de France: at the finish on the Champs-Elysees on July 25.

“We’re not going to sacrifice the team to defend the yellow jersey in the north of France. The time to work and defend begins in the Pyrenees,” Armstrong said Wednesday.

The five-time champion grabbed the yellow jersey Wednesday, leading his U.S. Postal Service squad to victory in a rain-soaked team time trial.

“It really was a special day,” Armstrong said. “I was just smiling on the bike. It was like a dream.”

The 32-year-old Texan shouted instructions to his teammates during the 40-mile ride from Cambrai to Arras.

France says it does not support US plans for international sanctions on Sudan if violence continues in Darfur.
The UN Security Council is debating a US draft resolution imposing sanctions on militias accused of "ethnic cleansing" against non-Arabs. The US also hinted that the sanctions could be extended to the government. Meanwhile, African leaders have urged Khartoum to stop bombing Darfur and say their proposed 300-strong force will have a mandate to protect civilians. US Secretary of State Colin Powell says promises to reign in the pro-government militia, known as the Janjaweed, have not been kept by Khartoum so far. "Only action not words can win the race against death in Darfur," he said.

Fahrenheit 9/11 opens in French theaters today !!!

Today was the official release of F 9/11 in French movie theaters. I went straight to see it of course. I attended the last showing, the 10:15 PM one. The hall was PACKED, something I don’t see often at this time of the day and in the middle of a week in july ! The crowd was rather focused and well-behaved during the movie, with occasional laughters of course, but then, it APPLAUDED at the end ! Something very rare in French theaters ! Last time I witnessed a round of applause in a French theater was 14 years ago at the beginning of T2 – Judgement Day !

This movie rocks ! I hope many Americans go see it, wake up, and get rid of Evil Chimp and his gang of neo-cons thugs ! So our two countries can be friends again !

Which is the best way to get from Paris to London?

My husband and me are travelling to Paris in November and we want to go to London for 3 or 4 days. We can’t decide on train-ferry-train, air or eurostar. We’re on a budget but we’re thinking time matters too. Please help us.

Working in Paris?

When in Paris, I asked myself, "Could I live here?" I met a few people who said certain cafes in the city hire native-English speakers and Americans, without work permits.

As someone without a university degree, or any legitimate means of getting a job or work permit, the only feasible way to "live" in Paris is to work "off the books".

Is this possible and does anyone have any advice?

I found a wonderful penpal (just a penpal) from france and my French has improved greatly. I plan to visit paris in September and very much looking forward to my visit in your country.

But, a frenchman responded to my best girlfriend’s ad on a USA single’s wedsite in January 2004 until now with promises of visiting, marriage, etc. Ask for monies for a flight to visit her in the USA and never arrived. Finally, she allowed me to view some of the e-mails, photos, phone number, etc. that he used for correspondence.

Paris-Plage

For the third year in a row, a section of the expressway on the Right Bank of the Seine has been turned into a sandy beach in the heart of Paris, complete with palm trees, umbrellas, hammocks and deck chairs.  Dubbed “Paris-Plage” (Paris-Beach), the site is free and open to the public 24 hours a day until August 18, with special activities programmed from 9 AM to 10:30 PM.
