The journalists, Christian Chesnot with Radio France International and Georges Malbrunot with the newspaper Le Figaro, were reported missing the morning of August 21. It was not know where they were being held.
According to Al-Jazeera, the kidnappers are demanding that the French government overturn a recently passed law that bans Muslim students from wearing headscarves in French public schools.
The ban was passed by the French parliament in the spring and is expected to go into effect in September. French lawmakers judged wearing religious attire to public school to be a violation of the constitutional separation of church and state.
France, a county of 60 million, has a Muslim population of 5 million.

I’m planning on teaching french in about 1 year and a half, and I was wondering if you guys could give me some pracitcal information about some things.
Firstly, which cities have the most diverstiy that you guys can tell me of? As a mixed Black American, I need to know which cities I should watch out for, and which cities seem to be more welcoming to foreigners.
The reason I ask this is because when I lived in Germany, no one told me of where not to go and where to go, and I ended up in some pretty sticky situationss.
I don’t want to create a forum on race, I just want some honest answers.
Also, which cities in France strike your fancy?

1 Read MoreHello Everyone. I am new to this board and it seems like an interesting one. I am from the U.S. and I spent a semester in France (in the ’80’s) and kept in touch with friends there for awhile but have fallen out of touch with them. I lived with a French family while attending school and had a very positive experience. I had a difference of opinion with some co-workers recently regarding how the french view the ending of WWII in France and their participation in it. My co-worker recently went to Paris on a short vacation, she also doesn’t speak french. She stated she saw some very large posters on a wall which she interpreted to mean the french had a very different view of WWII than we do.

I remember when I was a kid, when we’d go and visit my grandparents, my grandpa would usually open a bottle of white wine — my grandpa’s family is originally from Savoie, so they’ve always had a thing for white wine. Well, after I turned about 12 or 13, I remember my grandpa starting to offer me the glass of wine, too. And when I would refuse (I started enjoying wine quite late, and never really had the thing for white wine anyway), my grandpa would have this disappointed look in his eyes. As for my parents, they wouldn’t really bother.
