Posts disappear . . . where do they go?

Maybe they’re boycotting your posts. It seems you Americans will boycott just about anything !

We are boycott prone, aren’t we? So sorry. The government thinks it can solve the world’s problems with sanctions and boycotts. Wonder what they’d do if someone reversed and boycotted us?!

A couple of my posts got back on the forum tonight, but a couple (including this one) did not. I feel like I’m being censored and I’d love to know why. I hope I didn’t offend anyone!

It’s frustrating to see there’s been a reply and then open the category to a message telling you the category is empty. Hopefully it’s just a computer glitch.

SalB: Hang in there. I thinks it must be your computer. I meant to post this earlier but I didn’t. Air France had a big time special from 10/15 to 3/15 from various US airports including LAX. It ends today. I got r/t for two in November for $510. Thats the total for two – $510. Donerail

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH. We missed it!! We already got our tickets (on Air France) and it was twice that. I am soooooooooooo jealous.

I think I’ll check the web site and see if we can toss in one more trip this year. We’re going to London in a couple weeks and we have tickets to Nice in Oct. That gives us the better part of the summer to go someplace.

We decided we didn’t want another trip. We’re taking our youngest camping next week and we have our London trip in June. We’ve planned to follow the Mission Trail in CA this summer and we’ll probably go to Santa Fe for at least a week. We’ll be in France and Italy for six weeks in October and November and I have to go see my Mom in Ohio for another week sometime between all the other trips. We actually love our home and decided we should spend some time here too. Boy, that was a great price though!! What a temptation.

When in November are you going? We’re returning Nov. 13th so we might be there at the same time. That would be funny. Where are you going and how long are you staying? Isn’t it fun to plan trips?

SalB: We’re going early November and we plan to be in Paris for the Ceremonies on Nov. 11th. I think we’re leaning toward spending half the time in Paris at the end of the trip and Normandy at the beginning. Awaiting your tips and suggestions. Donerail

Donerail, There is the most marvelous place in Normandy. I’ve never seen another American there and it is magical. Here’s an excerpt from my 1998 journal (that is currently being put online at http://www.francetoday.com although I’m not to Normandy yet.)

"Drove north through Fleury and Perriers-sur-Andelle to follow signs to Château de Vascoeuil where we parked. Paid our entrance fee and wandered in. You immediately start to see sculptures and mosaics on the lawn and in every nook and cranny. The lovely old Château is also a museum of modern art and has a wonderful collection including Calder, Leger, Dali and others. We took pictures and went through a restored farmhouse and followed a stream (the river Andelle) to an
outdoor salon de thé, the Restaurant La Cascade. They had a good choice of menu items and prices in the little restaurant beside two waterfalls and in the shadow of a sculpture that would have fit in the fountain at the Pompidou Center in Paris. Ed had an excellent grilled salmon and I got roast duck. Our wonderful waiter tried his English and we tried our French. Good food; good fun; perfect setting."

There is more but this gives you the idea. There was a Cocteau exhibit that day. In the tower of the chateau we met an older gentleman who was absolutely amazing. He told us all about the history of the chateau . . . all the while insisting he didn’t speak any English. He was so funny and very knowledgeable. The restaurant was good and the setting incredible. Obviously, it could be cold and wet in November, but it’s worth a try.

There is Honfleur which is a major tourist destination . . . but for a reason. It’s utterly charming. The Falaise dAval has been photographed so many times that I’m sure you’ve seen it, but the real thing is better than the photos. If you haven’t visited Giverny, this would be the time to do it. Monet aside, the little town itself is beautiful. While you’re in the area, visit Château Gaillard at les Andelys. The chateau is in ruins, but the view is to die for. Have you seen Mont St. Michel? Also, you should visit Bayeux for both tapestry and the glorious cathedral. If you have time, get John Chapman’s "Slow Way to Paris" from the library and read it. We followed in his footsteps (car tracks!) several times and enjoyed it immensely. I think it’s out of print but I’m sure a good library would have it.

Normandy is wonderful. One day we followed little handpainted signs to a farm that sold cider. We ended up way way out in the boonies but we found the place and the cider was not only excellent, the farmer’s wife was selling little grape cakes so be got one for dinner. In the area you might try St. Felician cheese. It’s not quite as good as The Temptation of St. Felician cheese, but it’s a close second. We did enjoy it and it’s not one you seem mentioned often.

BTW, if you, and any else who has read through this has other journal, about your past trip to France, we’d be very happy to put them online (with picture and all) they are a great way to help others find what they need to visit.

This is so exciting. Everything is back in place and operating as it should. All the missing posts are back in their places. I’m so happy. Please thank the programmers. They did a very good and fast job.

I have five journals of trips to France (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003). The 1996 journal is on Francetoday.com and I’m in the process of putting the 1998 journal on their forum. The others are open and I have literally thousands of pictures. (A few are even good!)

If you’re really interested, let me know. I can’t get pictures on Francetoday.com and the pictures are my particular interest. BTW, we’re not very normal travelers. Outside of Paris we use the Logis de France chain and even Campanile on occasion. We don’t do starred restaurants and often picnic on the road. We haven’t taken a taxi yet and have only taken the RER out to Versailles. We’re leased Peugeot 206 (and Metro in Paris) people.

What I’m trying to say is the journals probably wouldn’t be of interest to people who flag a taxi, stay in 3 and 4 star hotels and eat at gourmet restaurants. My idea of shopping is buying a scarf in Strasbourg during the soldes. We like small towns, friendly people and beautiful scenery. I think we’re what most people would call boring. We’re very happy though!!
