Have you tried any of the web based translation sites? I use AltaVista’s translation page when I want to communicate with someone textually in France. It’s pretty good and it is much better than my lousy french is. I like translating my English to French and then translating the French it produced back into English. With a little experimentation you learn simpler ways to say things so that the translation flows better.
It can also translate a French webpage for you. Just plug in the URL and the site comes up in English.
