Go to any city in the world, and there are always some constants – the same fast-food places, the same big-name stores, and the same hotel chains. In one respect, this is not such a bad idea; after all, when exploring foreign cities, sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming, so a familiar name may be the oasis you need. Another advantage, particularly with hotel chains, is that no matter where you are in the world, you know what to expect, and that feels kind of safe and comforting. But if you want something different, a chance to experience more of the real Paris, and to really get a feel of what it’s like to be a Parisian for a few days, here are three of our favourite, non-touristy hotels for you.
Hotel Henri IV is situated on la Place Dauphine, one of the most beautiful squares in Paris, on the Île de la Cité – a small island on the Seine. The hotel also happens to be very close to where Johnny Depp lives, and you may well see the Hollywood A-lister dining just a few doors away, at le Caveau de Palais, which is next door to his Paris home. For rates and availability, please check the hotel’s website.
The Marais House is a four-roomed 16th century château on Rue de Montmorency, close to the Musée de Pompidou. Also close by is Nicolas Flamel’s house, which was built in 1407, making it the oldest house in Paris. Do try the food there – the ground floor of the house has been home to an inn since Flamel’s time. As you might expect from such an old building, the Marais House is full of traditional décor, antiques, art, and stone fireplaces. Sound like your kind of thing? Check out their website for more details.
Hotel Particulier de Montmartre: with only five suites, this small villa in Montmarte, which used to belong to the Hermès family, is not the cheapest hotel in Paris but if you want privacy and luxury, this is the place to stay. It even has a New York bartender who will make any drink, past or present, that you wish! More details on their website.
