We plan to do a lot of walking on our upcoming vacation. I’d like to find a walking shoe that’s sturdy enough for walking hilly paths in the north of Corsica and stylish enough so that I don’t feel frumpy as we walk around Paris. Anybody know where I can find my dream shoe? (P.S.: I have short feet – size 5 American – so I need to find a shoe company that provides a wide range of sizes.) Thanks for any help you can share with me.

You will probably find the information you want if you log onto either http://www.lonelyplanet.com (the Thorn Tree Forum) or http://www.virtualtourist.com and choose the Europe Forum.
They are active forums with helpful travelers. You could also enter Shoes into the search window on Virtual Tourist and scroll down to keywords.
Good luck. Sounds like you have a fun trip scheduled.
I hate to suggest shoes because I’m not very fashion conscious. However, you might look at Birkenstock walking shoes. These are not the sandals, but sturdy leather walking shoes. They are great on rough terrain but they do have a wide toe area so aren’t terribly attractive. Some are better looking than others so check online or in a larger Birkenstock store for a full range of styles.
Another possibility is Ecco. They are good sturdy shoes and many are quite attractive.
Of course, in France, Mephisto shoes are wonderful. Get the hiking or walking shoes, not the cute fashion shoes that are made in China for Mephisto. These are great walking shoes but they are very expensive, i.e. around $265 American dollars for a pair.
I’ve heard Geoxx are good but I’ve never worn them so can’t comment. I hope you had time to check the other two web sites to get some other ideas.
Good luck!
I bought a pair of Geoxx specifically to wear in Paris a couple of weeks ago. I think the shoes are fine and they are comfortable but maybe it’s just me, I had back pain and heel pain anyway.
