The museum
As a showcase of American, Oceanian, Asian and African arts and civilisations, the Musée du quai Branly is a unique venue offering a fresh approach to non-Western cultures in the heart of Paris.
The garden and building provide a real change of scene for visitors in a new and enjoyable world.
The artefacts on display (objects, instruments, clothing, etc.) attest to other ways of leading daily lives around the world. The non-European material and art forms often arouse new aesthetic emotion and prompt new ways of thinking, thereby playing an educative role as regards tolerance.
The museum also organises temporary exhibitions. Whether they present objects on loan from others museums the world over, the works of contemporary artists, or explore key themes about human relationships (such as the major anthropology exhibition), these exhibitions allow onlookers to gain a better grasp of the artistic, historic and cultural link between yesterday and today, between here and elsewhere.
The museum is also where living arts reflect the artefacts through shows, concerts, encounters and debates.
Activities to encourage discovery of the four continents (music, plastic arts, etc.) have been designed for families and children in particular: the whole journey into art and culture is within our reach in the heart of Paris.

At the end of the ‘ramp’, the long winding walkway that spirals up from the reception hall, the permanent collections area presents the great geographical regions in which the Musée du quai Branly’s remarkable collections originated: Oceania, Asia, Africa and the Americas. The visitor makes his way fluidly across them, taking in the major crossroads between civilisations and cultures: Asia-Oceania, Insulindia, and Mashreck-Maghreb.
The 3,500 artefacts are presented so as to highlight the historical depth of the cultures that produced them, and the many different meanings that the works themselves possess. The museography encourages the visitor to take the time to inform himself on major thematic areas: masks and tapa in Oceania, costume in Asia, and African musical instruments and textiles form the subjects of a series of fascinating video presentations.
