Description

Macon is a city with a population of 36000 in very south of Burgundy, France.

Access

By car: From A6 coming from Paris or Lyon, get off at Macon Nord or Macon Sud.

By train: There are two train stations, one in the center of town for local trains and one about 10km outside of town for the TGV from Lyon and Paris.

Transportation

There are a couple of bus lines (for more information) but given the small size of the central area it is easiest to get around on foot. For cars traffic is only a problem on the main roads out of town when people are getting off of work. Parking in town can be a problem as all lots are metered and are often full.

Activities and Sightseeing

Drive outside of town and visit one of the many wineries that make burgundy wine or drive about 20 minutes south and visit the beaujolais wineries which make much more (and much better) wines than just beaujolais nouveau.

Shopping

In the pedestrian area downtown there are a lot of shops, mostly clothing, but also toys, food, home decor, etc.

Restaurants

Er Bleimor: Very good crèpes from 5€ to 10€ a crèpe, be sure to make reservations if you plan on going as it's small and usually full.

Restaurant Pierre: Gastronomic restaurant with menus starting at 30€ up to 80€ without drinks.

There are many other restaurants from kebab and sandwich vendors, to chinese and indian cuisine.

If you're feeling adventurous you can head out into the countryside across the river where many restaurants serve "poulet de bresse a la crème" (supposedly the best chicken in France) as well as other local specialities such as fresh frog legs (tastes like chicken in garlic butter) and "escargot de bourgogne" (snails, which taste like rubbery garlic butter). Prices range from modest (around 20€) at "Restaurant du Pont" in Saint Romain des Iles, to medium (around 40€) at "Le Saint Laurent" in Saint Laurent (just acoss the bridge in downtown Macon), to very expensive (100€ to 200€) at "Georges Blanc" in Vonnas.

Nightlife

Choose from any of the bars on the quais (along the river) they're all pretty much the same. From something different try the Traboule(it's back in an alley on the pedestrian street), it's styled like a pub and has a very good selection of beers on tap. You can also try the Maison de Bois, a café/restaurant in an old wooden building on the pedestrian street.

Lodging

There are a couple of hotels in town, or you can try futher out for cheap lodgings like Formula 1.
