My girl and myself would like to relocate to Paris. I have a vast medical history and require expensive medications. What is healthcare and insurance in France like? Is healthcare a government issue or is it acquired mostly through employment? Any help is appreciated. Also, how is the economic climate in Paris? I currently live outside Washington, DC. Are living expenses similiar to those in the USA?

I’m french
I’m living in France
tell me more about what you want to know?
I’m sure I can help you but my english is not very good. it will be a good exercise!
Well my friend, I guess that living in france is less expensive than living in the states. I have a friend of mine who lives there and he’s very happy and the goverment is helping him especially after having his first child there. But I think people in france are facing an unemployment problem as my friend told me.
But I think Canada is much suitable for you.
keep in touch…
Thank you for your response. I require many medications and I currently have insurance through my employment. The medications sustain my life as I have had two major transplant surgeries. My only concern with moving is having access to my medications. Obviously I can’t relocate if I can’t get the meds I need. As far as work goes, I am happy to do whatever kind of work is available. I have managed restaurants, driven a truck, labored and been an office worker as well as knowledge of computers. I feel as if I might be able to acquire employment.
I hope this helps. Again, thanks for your response.
Thank you for your response. We are facinated with the culture of Paris which is why we were inquiring as to the benefits and financial situation of france. I have had many types of employment and would gladly take the work available to me. My main concern is access to my medications, which are very expensive. I would never be able to pay for them without insurance or some kind of medical program.
ok
in france it’s easy to find a job like "trucker". this is a good paid job. if you’ve got a fluent french you can work in a restaurant as a team mananger. If you want to work , you’ll work. do you speak french or not ?
But if you want to come in France to work, I think that you’ll have to ask for the french nationality. it will be easier for you to benefit from the national medical program which can pay most part of your medications.
well, about the dole
in france , most of unemployed people just do not want to work. when you’ve got the sun, the sea, good food, cheap cigarettes and drinks… and when you earn money by doing nothing (thanks to our national social program) you can just avoid working ! that’s what I do ! mm not really I haven’t got the sun today…
Sincerely, I’ve visited USA, Canada… and lived in UK, and my favorite country is FRANCE. so.. follow me !
do you need a passport to move to france?
Rod, you are denititly talking my language. I love the sun, good food, and the sea, but I also like to work. It’s good to know that work is available. I do not speak french, but my girl understands it and speaks a little. I am going to learn starting NOW. Thank you.
yes, of course , you need a passport.
William, do you really want to settle in Paris or in another city with better living conditions ? I’m french and as the most part of french people, I would never move to Paris : pollution, noises, car trafic, expensive rents for just a small flat etc.
but if it’s your choice, I’ll understand and try to help you as far as I’ll can. if you want to learn french, with a free method, you can go on http://www.wanadoo.fr : it’s on of the two most popular french sites. the other one is http://www.voila.fr
and as voila means : "that is all"
Je reste à votre disposition pour toutes autres questions que vous pourriez vous posez concernant votre projet de vous installer en france.

I am currently a culinary student in the states. I need a change and am seriously considering moving to France. I would love to move to a small beautiful town. I am just now starting to learn to speak French. can you give me any advice on where would be a good place to live and find work? and what about living, renting a house or apartment?
Rod – Are conditons in the suburbs of Paris nice? What towns would you suggest we look in to? Thanks for the web sites, I will start learning. I have been trying to find info on how to become a France national or citizen. Do you know what is required? Thanks again for all of your help and suggestions.
Hi, my name is khadidja i live in USA (Boston) and i am thinking to move to france, how is it like to live in france. I do speak and read fluently french. thank you and all my best
I’ll give an answer for each one of you trhough this message.
William: if you really want to live close to paris, suburb can be a solution (low rents) but don’t forget security problems. You can settle in cities such as Marseille (in the south), the weather is really good and you can find a job easily. another really good city : MONTPELLIER in the south too: a wonderful city.my favorite one.
If you enjoy drinking wine you can settle in Bordeaux.
Lyon is paris’s twin, with less inhabitants.
you can choose between one of those. they’re big french cities wich can provide you most of services you’ll need as expatriated.
– I don’t know anything about how to become a french citizen. ask it in usa, sorry.
kim:great idea to come over my country to cook (good meals I hope).in france we enjoy high quality food. not like in the uk ! I well know small french towns and I can tell you that it’s hard to find a job there. but If you speak french and really want to live in a small and of course beautiful town you can settle in switzerland. I think that it would be easier for you to become a switz. citizen and to find a job as cook in a restaurant. I’ve got a friend who do that (he’s a french citizen) don’t forget that switzerland is not a European country. I know, that’s strange. but wages are higher than in france. and it’s a beautiful country.
that’s all for tonight (for me, because it’s midnight here!)
I’ll answer to other questions tomorrow.

Rod- I do appreciate your advice it is very helpful. Can you suggest a big city (other than Paris) that it might be easier to work and live in or do you think that Switzerland would be an easier way to go? I am just starting to learn French, will that make it difficult to find a job? Are there any restaurants or towns that you can suggest? I am going to try and research it today. I do appreciate your help.

What is healthcare and insurance in France like? Is healthcare a government issue or is it acquired mostly through employment? Any help is appreciated. Also, how is the economic climate in Paris?
the healthcare system is good in france and yes, healthcare is a government issue. please just read the wikipedia article on that topic about healthcare in france
just a few lines from the wiki article: Healthcare in France is funded by compulsory national insurance. Social Security in France is calculated as a percentage of income. Doctors and dentists establish private practices. Patients are free to choose which health provider they visit. A patient is expected to pay at the time of use, and claim up to 85% of the cost back from the state. France has a high standard of care, without shortening waiting times.
The general economic climate in Paris is better than in the US now but that depends on the industry. the real estate market is very stable. prices for french property in the capital  are higher than in any other big city in france but there's no place like paris!
Hello,
I have learned of a job that I would love to have in France, but I’m not sure the pay is enough for all the taxes and living expences. The pay will be around 24000 Euro/year, and I saw on some websites that studios and apartments in Paris or near Paris are >1000Euro/month. Including 35% income tax and some other taxes you are left with nothing.
Can you tell me more on this subject? The job is in Paris, Velizy-Villacoublay.
Another thing if I would have to choose from France/Paris and Ireland/Cork what should I pick?
SalB
What is your country of citizenship? It makes a difference. If you are not an EU citizen, it is quite difficult to get a job in France.
Apartment rental depends on which area you choose to live. As in all cities, some places cost a LOT more than others. Velizy-Villacoubly is tucked between Versailles and Rambouillet so it might be an expensive area. I truly do not know. I do know it's outside central Paris by a goodly way so when you go into the center of town, you would have to take the RER and it costs more than a simple Metro ride inside the city. If you live near where you work, that would not be a problem. If you plan to live in the center of town, you will have more expensive transportation.
I don't know anything about Cork, but the Irish economy has improved a great deal over the last couple decades and living there is probably as expensive as France if not more so.
Why not check real estate ads in both countries and see what you find. If you are not an EU citizen, you should also see what you need to do before you can apply for a job in either country.
Good luck.
Hi
I found this blog about France very helpful – good luck
http://www.latitudes.co.uk/blog/
I am a young girl, seeking to live the rest of my future in France. I am hoping to move within the next five years and I am seeking information on what life is like there and of nice places to live.
I would be very grateful if someone could give me advice on this.
Thanks
SalB
Before anyone can give you any suggestions, we need to know if you are an EU citizen or a citizen of another country. The rules vary wildly depending on your citizenship.
Do you have education or skills that would be useful in France? As far as whether or not France is a nice place to live, yes, it is beautiful, the health care is excellent, food is legend, transportation excellent. It's a great place to live if you can earn a living.
There are many different parts of France and they are all very different. What are you looking for in terms of your surroundings? Small town, city, rural, cold wet winters, Mediterranean climate, mountains, river, ocean and beaches, dry climates, lots of nearby history, escape from the madding crowd? These are all available and more so let us know what you want.
Im a Canadian citizen and have a green card living in the U.S. want to move to France. I have an Associates of Arts Degree that i gain here in the U.S. If there is a program where you can study and learn French in France and/or gain legal status to work and study in France please anyone who has great advice let me know.
Thank you
SalB
You say you have an Associate of Arts degree so you must have attended a US junior or community college. Go to the Counselor's Office at the school and ask them about programs in foreign countries. I bet there is information about French Programs and they may even have an exchange program of some sort.
There are lots of French programs all over the country so your problem will be choosing which one to use. You might look at where you want to live and then check the schools there for French-English programs. As a Canadian citizen, you will find it much easier to move to France than an American would. There is some sort of work agreement between Canada and the EU but I don't know what it is.
Try posting your question on http://www.virtualtourist.com because they get that question often enough that I've seen it a few times. I think you have to join to post a question so if you don't want to join, just do a search because you can do that without joining. It doesn't cost anything to join but that's your decision. Good luck. You should be able to do what you want.
Im a single mother of two little girls. One 5 yrs and one 10 months. My 5 yr old is Autisic. I recive SSI for her being disabled and child support sometimes. I want to move to france, love paris… its history, its people, language etc. etc…. I am an Mexican (born in Mexico) and American citizen (have two passports). I came to the U.S for college, finished a B.A. in Communications in big well known university. France is a very big interest to me because I want to learn and master the french language. Would it be hard for me to settle there, fine a job? I only have experience in Television both in the U.S. and Mexico. I can say I only know like 40% of the french language. Any advise?
