Otherwise known as marché de noël, Christmas markets in France are a great excuse for a short winter break. Bringing a magical, fairytale atmosphere to most towns across the country, the Christmas markets also provide an opportunity to buy somewhat more unusual gifts for your loved ones, particularly for food and drinks lovers. Here are three of our favorites:
Avignon – until December 31st
At Place de l’Horloge in the medieval city of Avignon, Christmas shoppers can not only purchase gifts for their loved ones but may also discover the traditional animated (and often musical) nativity scenes and santons that the region is famous for, wonder at the fabulous illuminations, and see Santa arriving on his sled.
Lille – until December 30th
One of the largest Christmas markets in France, Place Rihour is filled with 80 wooden chalets selling everything from traditional festive ware to foodie gifts. Naturally, Santa puts in an appearance, and of course, there is a funfair too.
Riquewihr – until January 6th
This is where the magic of Christmas really happens. The Alsatian village of Riquewihr is often described as one of the most beautiful in France, and with good reason; imagine the most fairytale village possible – that’s Riquewihr! During the festive period, the streets and squares of Esplanade des remparts & Fernand Zeyer are home to over 100 stalls, where shoppers can buy uniquely Alsatian gifts. At weekends even more stalls are added, extending the market along the main street, Rue du Général de Gaulle. In addition, local winemakers decorate their cellars, and open them to the public, offering many wine-themed activities. And if that isn’t enough, reason to visit Riquewihr, there are also gastronomy workshops and tasting events throughout the season.
