The castle of Rambouillet is surrounded by a 20,000-acre forest, which is what remains of the former forest of the Yveline region.

From the time it was a fortress, the castle kept its bastions and its 14th-century keep, despite the numerous changes decided by the successive owners.

There are many canals and ornamental lakes in the grounds of the castle. This hunting ground next to Paris attracted many kings, from François I who died there to Charles X who abdicated there. In the 17th century, the literary meetings of the précieuses took place in this castle. During these meetings, the marchioness of Rambouillet and her daughter Julie d’Angennes filled everybody with admiration.

Until now, the castle of Rambouillet has kapt its function of official residence given by Louis XVI 1st, and later by Napoleon.
