The Castle of Talcy

The Château de Talcy

Monument

This seigniorial château was constructed towards 1420, but the keep may have been built with some more ancient components. Contemporary with the great Renaissance châteaus of the Val de Loire, however, the Italian fashion and the search for decoration did not influence its style. Yet it was erected by an Italian man, the banker Bernard Salviati. This edifice is completed by a well in the courtyard, intact communal rooms with a press-house and a dovecote, grounds and an old vegetable garden. It is exceptional that this residence kept the interior aspect and even the furniture it had in the 18th century. This château is famous for his love affairs: first between the famous French poet Ronsard and Cassandre, the daughter of the Italian owner Salviati, who inspired to the poet the poem “Amours de Cassandre” and later the romance of Agrippa d’Aubigné and Diane, the granddaughter of Salviati. The bedrooms known as bedrooms of Catherine de Médicis and Charles IX also recall the conference of Talcy, which gathered in 1562 and for the last time Huguenots and Catholics. In 1932, the château was sold to the State, on the condition that all the valuable furniture would stay there forever.
