I am planning my vacation (2 partents + 2 children) to France this summer and having a very hard time in a hotel booking. I want to stay in Morbihan (close to Carnac) or Loire Atlantique (close to La Baule), in other words close to the beach but not in too crowded of place.
I appreciate any suggestion. Can I simply drive there (we are renting a car from Paris) without reservations?
Thanks.

Hi. Normally I would say it depends on when this summer you are planning to go. However, with the D-Day celebrations and special visitor packages, I expect hotel rooms can be hard to find this summer. You might be more comfortable making reservations.
We don’t care for the La Baule area because it is so touristy, although the beaches are great. Carnac is also a traffic nightmare most of the summer but it really is worth dealing with the traffic. There are other megalith sites in the area that aren’t so crowded and you should try to visit some of those too. In the Carnac area, you might consider staying near Quiberon, a long peninsula snaking down from the Carnac area.
Two hotel suggestions: (1) Go to the top of this page an click on the blue and red France.com and you will go to a hotel search engine. Right under where it says "Search," click on Hotels and choose Browse Hotels. You can search by hotel or city name or just by map. We’ve used this site often to reserve our hotels and it’s excellent. You will see a photo (or photos) of the hotels along with reviews by people who have stayed there and pull no punches. (2) The other reservation site we use is the Logis de France chain and they are excellent too. They cover all price ranges and offer photos of the hotels. They do not have reviews, but basically what you see is what you get. Most of them also have good restaurants attached. Their web address is: http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/ and is in English.
We’ve used both reservation sites and never had a problem with either.
I hope you find something and hope you enjoy your trip. It’s a lovely area of France.
