Amble along the tiny, cobbled streets of Colmar, past half-timbered buildings, through a pretty quarter known as Little Venice, to Hostellerie Le Maréchal. If this 16th century hotel, with its gables, dark beams and crooked tiles, is a window onto the Middle Ages, then its interior is a reprise of the reigns of Kings Louis XV and XVI. Period art, décor and furniture follow you up winding staircases, along intricate passages and into its lavish bedrooms. Expect gilt candelabra, Louis XV clocks, and huge four-poster, or canopied, double beds. The wonderland does not end there. In ‘A l’Echevin’ Restaurant Gastronomique, you find quintessentially Alsatian cuisine: from goose liver paté with apple jam, fresh lobster from the hotel’s pond to Alsatian squab. And, the sommelier offers many famous wines – Colmar is, after all, the Capital of the Alsace Route du Vin. You can enjoy it all overlooking the canal. A truly romantic escape!
