687 kilometers, 6 hours and 40 minutes on the expressway with tolls of nearly 42 euros. This was from Paris to Avignon. You can check any spot to spot at http://www5.mappy.com/?lang=en You type in departure location and arrival location, then choose express (usually tolls) or scenic and search. You will get kilometers, time and tolls along with approximate gasoline costs.
With your limited time, I’d suggest the TGV high speed train and then rent a car when you get to Provence. We’ve never taken the train but you can check their web site at http://www.sncf.com to get the times.
In Provence we stay at the Moulin de Vernegues near a tiny town called Mallemort. http://www.aix-en-provence.com/moulinvernegues/index2.htm The hotel is really nice but it is on a golf course and out in the sticks. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place. We don’t care for their 4-star restaurant so have never eaten there. They do have an excellent breakfast but we usually go into town because it’s cheaper. It’s a great place for day trips to Lourmarin, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, St. Remy, Les Baux, Arles, the Camargue, Daudet’s Mill, the Abbaye Montmajour, the Alpilles and perched villages . . . the list goes on. It’s one of my favorite places in all of France. You would never run out of things to do and see. We keep going back and see something new every time. It is stunningly beautiful countryside even if you don’t go to any of the famous places. The hotel has a very nice pool, tennis, lovely walks . . . and the occasional loud party on a Saturday night! These are usually weddings and we always seem to land on wedding night. Avoid Saturdays or ask for a room far from the restaurant. They’re not rowdy; just celebratory and last until about 3:00 AM . . . way past our bedtime!
SalB, have you gone to the post-office in Arles during the summer?
If you have, have you been served by a young man?
If you have………then it was me !!!!!
Hi. No, the fellow who helped me definitely did not qualify as a young man. He was very nice but past my definition of young . . . although younger than I am. )
Thank you SalB – I will be sure to let you know if we do make it there in October! Kind regards, AnaKral
AnaKral, I hope you see at least a couple of my suggestions. It really is a gorgeous part of France. We’ll be up in Normandy then so having an entirely different experience.
I bet we both enjoy our trips! Have a great time.
